Mr. Avenloch is the terse, sharp-voiced man who collects the job applicants for servant positions at Stallery who have been selected by Mr. Amos to go and work in the gardens. So he is evidently the head gardener there. During the course of Conrad's Fate, he is not seen much until Conrad and Christopher discover him and young Smedley lost in the probability fault areas of the manor building. When Conrad leads them into the staff elevator, the ebullient temporary underbutler Mr. Prendergast immediately refers to them as 'a rake and a wheelbarrow' and proceeds to hilariously imitate Mr. Amos for the whole of their trip downwards. A bit character, but pretty clear and well-created.
