Gabrelisovic is the fifth and last person whose name is on the list of possible Magids given to protagonist Rupert Venables by his dying mentor Stan Churning just an hour before his death.

He is hard to trace because he is from the Balkans, and at the time the list was handed over, that region was in the middle of a war. When Rupert tangles the fatelines of his candidates into the Phantasmacon convention in Wantchester, the first meeting he has with Gabrelisovic occurs when the man barges up to the breakfast table of Ted Mallory and his family to thank him for having written Le Morte d'Arthur -- a book actually compiled or written by Sir Thomas Malory in the 15th century.

At another point, he stalks up to Rupert and Zinka Fearon and interrupts their conversation to announce that they smell wrong to him, and that he has stalked and killed many like them with his bare hands during the wars in his country. It becomes clear both from this and other encounters with him, that Gabrelisovic is stark staring nutters. Nevertheless, he has strong magical aptitude, and is easily swayed by other more powerful and malevolent forces at the convention. But bigger events overtake things before he can do too terribly much damage.
