Plot[]
A Sudden Wild Magic is unusual among Diana Wynne Jones novels in that it involves primarily adult characters, engaged in adult pursuits, including careers, love affairs, and an underground effort by invading earth women to seduce a group of celibate monks in another dimension. It's quite odd, but a very engrossing and satisfying book.
Set on an Earth very much like our own, it concerns the activities of a group of magical adepts who work together in groups, but in secret from official channels, to protect the Earth and its inhabitants from dangers of all kinds. The particular group in this novel happens to be English, although it is said there are many other groups of witches and wizards who lead similar secret but communal lives of service in other parts of the world.
